CMS 220: Online@UT's Adaptive Release

Steps 9 + 10

Step 9

At this point, David has guaranteed that his students have reviewed his Business Fundamentals materials; however, he has not yet guaranteed that they have mastered the content. To do so, he creates one more sub-folder in the Fundamentals content area. This one he names “Review Materials.”

Please note the description of the folder: David is telling his students that they are seeing this folder only if they scored below an 80% on the Fundamentals Quiz. To do this, he creates the folder, fills it with his review materials, and then clicks the Manage button.

Step 10

This time, because David is releasing the folder based on only one criteria – the student’s score on the Fundamentals Quiz – he is able to use the first Manage option: Adaptive Release. Here, again, he can restrict access based on Date, Membership, Gradebook item, or Review Status. He chooses Gradebook item and begins by selecting “Fundamentals Quiz” from the drop-down menu. Next, he enters the appropriate grading criteria, which in this case is “Score: Less than or equal to: 79”.

Now, only students who score less than an 80% on the quiz will gain access to the Review Materials.

NOTE: In order for David’s plan to be pedagogically sound, he had to take special care in creating the Fundamentals Quiz:

  1. Because students will be required to retake the quiz until they score at least an 80%, he selected the “Allow multiple attempts” option.
  2. To prevent students from rifling through their textbooks while taking the quiz, he used a time limit of only 10 minutes for the 20-item quiz.
  3. To make the quiz useful over multiple attempts, he created a test bank of more than one hundred questions, then designed the quiz so that Blackboard would randomly grab only twenty.
