Using the Online Gradebook

The Online Gradebook

The online gradebook is an internal spreadsheet feature that posts all student grades associated with course assessments. You have four options for viewing the gradebook:

  • Report by User - an individual view of each student's record and statistics (number of times they have accessed specific areas of the course).
  • Report by Item - a view of all student grades for a particular item.
  • Spreadsheet - a comprehensive view of all student records.
  • Export Spreadsheet - to save student grades to an Excel spreadsheet on your hard drive.

To access the Gradebook area, click on the "Control Panel" button and locate the "Assessments" area (mid-left column). Click on "Online Gradebook." From there you can select the options for viewing the course gradebook. To set up your initial gradebook, click on "Spreadsheet" and set up the entries for each graded item of the course. Remember, you can create an entry and withold it from student view by clicking on "No" under "Available for Students?"

Exporting the Gradebook

As previously mentioned, you can export the gradebook. By doing so, you are creating a comma-delimited file (named gradebook.csv) that can be opened by any spreadsheet application (i.e. Microsoft Excel). However, because the file is not application-specific, you need to first launch your spreadsheet software application, then select "File, Open" and locate your gradebook.csv file to open from within the software application. You can also archive grades throughout the semester, always a good idea.

Importing the Gradebook

A new feature of the Assessment area is the ability to upload an Excel spreadsheet containing grade items. This feature allows you to manipulate and analyze student grades in a more granular fashion.
