CMS 110: Introduction to Online@UT
Monday, 8/24, 10am-noon
Thursday, 9/3, 1-3pm
Wednesday, 10/28, 9-11am
One way to increase interaction with and among students is to augment face-to-face lectures with more engaging activities such as self-paced tutorials, discussion forums, and live chats. Online@UT makes it easy to organize and post these materials online for students to access anytime from anywhere via the Web. In this introduction to Online@UT's course management system, participants will access their online course site, receive an overview of instructor development tools and resources, and learn to upload a variety of document types.
Use of the online forms that give you access to your course sites requires CMS certification, which can be acquired by taking our Course Management System (CMS) 110 workshop in either a face-to-face or online version. If you are an experienced Blackboard user, but are new to UT or Online@UT for instructional use, please contact the Helpdesk at (865) 974-9900 (during the work day) or complete the form at http://online.utk.edu/contact (after hours) so we can fast track your access to the system.

CMS 110 OL may be taken in lieu of the required two-hour CMS 110 workshop. Participants in the self-paced, web-based version of CMS 110 will practice the same skills as their peers in the instructor-led workshop: posting content, creating online assessments, tracking grades, transferring documents, and fostering effective electronic communication (e-mail, discussion boards, chats).

There are two SMART technologies available on campus to enhance your teaching capabilities. You can connect a laptop to the SMART Board or SMART Sympodium and project your computer screen to a larger display. Both technologies use SMART software. The SMART Sympodium, which is an interactive electronic lectern, features a screen console and an electromagnetic stylus. The SMARTBoard works like a combination touchpad / whiteboard. Participants will learn how to set up their computer for use with these technologies and how to use the interactive features of each to meet diverse learner needs.

Wednesday, 8/26, 1-4pm
Thursday, 10/8, 1-3pm
Wednesday, 11/18, 9am-noon
From the clicker technology pilot study ITC conducted during spring 2009, eight of nine faculty participants recommended that UTK switch clicker technology vendors this fall from eInstruction (CPS) to Turning Technologies (TurningPoint). Some of the benefits faculty identified with the TurningPoint system included:
- Ease of use in creating and delivering quizzes
- Quiz delivery without PowerPoint or in-class computer via ResponseCard Anywhere
- Response submissions via the clicker or mobile devices: cell phone, PDA, or a laptop computer
- Integration with Blackboard Grade Center
- No student registration purchase
- Less overall cost for students
ITC and Turning Technologies is providing training for all current and interested clicker technology faculty. If you'd like to use clickers in your class, you must receive training on the TurningPoint system. You should also contact the UT Bookstore to place your clicker order. If you have any questions, contact the Helpdesk at 974-9900.
