Integrating Technology Into Foreign Language Teaching and Learning

Dr. Dolly J. Young

Associate Professor
Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures

"Experience is not always the kindest of teachers, but it is surely the best." - Spanish Proverb

Dr. Dolly Young's interest in the use of technology in language instruction began in 1989 when she arrived at The University of Tennessee. While she is the first to admit that her computer skills needed a lot of work, she was confident that she could learn. She began taking workshops at the Innovative Technology Center to develop her skills. Although she was overwhelmed at first she eventually convinced herself that she could succeed, continued to explore how technology could enhance the teaching and learning experience in the domain of foreign languages. She never dreamt that ten years later, she would find herself immersed in a $200,000 Center for Academic Transformation PEW Grant to redesign Spanish 150 at The University of Tennessee. Dr. Dolly Young is a wonderful example of what one can do with a vision and the desire to learn.
