Peterson applied for and received a Faculty First grant from the Innovative Technology Center (ITC) in the fall of 2002. She was teamed with Jennifer Gramling, a Graduate Assistant at ITC to develop the Online@UT site for BCMB 515: Experimental Techniques in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology. Dr. Peterson and Ms. Gramling met regularly throughout the summer prior to the start of fall classes. Although, Dr. Peterson had built web pages in the past, this time allowed her to become familiar with the Online@UT environment and the basics of adding course content. In addition, it gave her a chance to reflect on how she'd taught the class in the past, how the new technology tools could enhance the delivery of the content, and how a more learner-centered approach could be introduced:

"I was thrilled when I got the Faculty First grant. Jennifer and I sat down to meet, and we brainstormed about creative ways to use the Online@UT interface. That really expanded my thinking. Previously, I had them turn in a Biotechnology project as a ten-page paper. Now, I have them build web pages instead."
