Faculty Spotlight
November - December 2004: Dr. Diane Hendrix
Bio
Dr. Diane Hendrix attended the University of Tennessee as an undergraduate in animal science and as a graduate student at the veterinary school. She always knew she wanted to go into medicine and liked the idea of working with "multiple species." She interned at North Carolina State University followed by a two-year period as a general practitioner.
Dr. Hendrix decided to specialize in ophthalmology because "unlike most of the other specialties we do get to practice 'multi species' medicine with common patients being dogs, horses, cats, birds and reptiles. Ophthalmologists also practice both of the arts of medicine and surgery at in-depth levels rather than just practicing surgery or medicine." There are only about 300 boarded veterinary ophthalmologists in the world. She began her residency in comparative ophthalmology at the University of Florida, became board certified and joined the UT faculty in 1995. She explains why she chose to come back to UT: "I like it here. The small animal clinic is a very friendly and cohesive group. We work very well together."
