Change Can Be Better!
If you haven't already heard, OIT has reorganized and now the services that ITC offers are part of a larger group called the OIT Support Organization. As part of this shift, ITC now means Innovative Technology Consulting and has expanded services for faculty by encompassing Research Computing Support and Digital Media Services.

Also, we now have a centralized gateway to all OIT services: 974-9900 and help.utk.edu. We're letting the campus community know about this change in a variety of ways, all based on the message, "One Contact, Many Solutions."

One Contact, Many Solutions

By directing all service requests and inquiries through 974-9900 and help.utk.edu, it will allow us in OIT to have a better understanding of what services our customers need and when, while allowing us to better allocate resources to meet those needs. Note that this change affects all areas of OIT, including instructional technology, telephone and cable TV services, webcasting requests, and basic technical support.

If you have someone you normally work with, please continue to contact that person. If you don't know who to contact for a new request, question, or issue, call 974-9900 or help.utk.edu.

Clicker Vendor Swap and Training
UTK is switching clickers to Turning Technologies' ResponseCard XR. On August 26, 27, 28, 31, and September 1, Turning Technologies will provide a one-time only clicker swap with cost savings incentives for all students with the old CPS clicker. UT Bookstore up-front clicker costs: $10 clicker return w/ CPS lifetime registration; $40 clicker return w/o CPS lifetime registration; $50 for new clicker.  In addition, all students will receive a $10 mail-in rebate coupon. Students must bring their clicker to the UC lobby (outside of the Bookstore) during the swap period to receive the discounts toward the new clicker purchase price.

Turning Point Clickernew Turning Technologies clickerTraining is provided for all current and interested clicker technology faculty. Remember, this is a new vendor, so if you will be using clickers this fall, you must place your clicker order with the UTK bookstore and receive training on the TurningPoint system.

Visit the ITC workshops page to schedule your training session.

Ph.D. Candidate Requesting Your Involvement
in His Research

Colleges and universities are aggressively adding computer technologies as part of their regular teaching and learning activities. Many surveys across higher education are showing that the integration of technology into the classroom is one of their top priorities because they believe that this integration will provide better learning experiences for students and educators. Students in your classes are using a diversity of technologies like instant messaging, texting, blogs, social networks and many others. One of the technologies we see on the rise in many universities is podcasting.

The use of podcasting in higher education is showing promise in expanding student learning experiences and motivation to learn. Many educators around the world are proposing that podcasting is potentially a powerful tool to supplement classroom learning activities. However, research on podcasting in higher education has yet to be reported; though many quasi-experimental projects are suggesting that podcasting produces positive results on student learning.

The purpose in conducting this study is to research some of the factors that influence the use of podcasting as a supplemental learning tool here at the University of Tennessee. Additionally, the study will look into the perceptions that educators have concerning podcast use in the classroom. This study will examine diffusion of podcasting into the university classrooms, and will seek to understand some of the perceived motivations and constraints that influence the use of podcasting among educators.

Because there are few studies reporting how educators perceive and use podcasting in education your input is very important. Your thoughts on the survey will provide very useful information that will help educators better understand how podcasting is being used in higher education and how it may enhance their classroom effectiveness.

This project has received IRB approval from the University of Tennessee and your participation is completely anonymous.
