Blogging in large undergraduate courses: Promoting conceptual change in Nutrition 100

Dr. Trena Paulus
Assistant Professor, Educational Psychology & Counseling
Dr. Marsha Spence
Research Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition

Previous research has shown that taking into account students’ prior knowledge, using active learning strategies, and providing feedback are all important to promote learning/conceptual change in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math). Lectures are limited in their ability to provide such opportunities. Learn how integrating blogs into a large undergraduate course can make students’ prior knowledge visible and provide an opportunity for facilitating conceptual change.

Leveraging Second Life to Create a Technology-Assisted Constructivist Language Environment for Spanish 111/112

Dr. Dolly Young
Professor, Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures

Doug Canfield
Coordinator, Language Resource Center,
Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures

Today’s students are socialized in ways that are radically different from previous generations (Prensky 2001). They require learning environments that allow greater personal latitude in constructing knowledge of a target language and culture.
Come hear how Second Life was used to create a language learning environment for Spanish 111/112 and the implications of this pilot study for future implementation. Second Life is an Internet-based virtual reality environment where participants interact with each other through avatars.
