Clicker Technology at UT Knoxville

Picture of students using clickers. In the Fall of 2005, UT Knoxville's Office of Information Technology (OIT) conducted a Pilot Study on the use of personal response systems, called 'clickers,' in the classroom. The study was conducted with eInstruction's CPSrf system.

What are 'Clickers'?

Clickers are remote-controlled devices that allow students to send their responses to multiple choice and true-false questions, via radio frequency (rf) technology, to a receiver connected to the instructor's laptop computer. Software installed on the computer analyzes the data and displays the results graphically (bar graphs, pie charts, etc.), giving both students and faculty a quick idea of what concepts might need further review or preparation. UT Knoxville has adopted the Classroom Performance System (CPSrf) “clicker” developed by eInstruction.

This new trend in teaching and learning has been quite successful in engaging students and enhancing their learning experience.
  • Faculty can instantly assess student understanding of the material.
  • Student attendance increases.
  • Students are better prepared for class.
  • Class participation is enhanced via peer discussion and conceptual thinking.

What steps do I take to use clickers?

Any UT Knoxville faculty interested in using clicker technology can contact Dr. Christina Goode at 974-6470 to request a course site and receive an instructor’s kit which includes: a quickstart quide, CPS software, a receiver, and a clicker. Faculty must also contact the UT Bookstore to order clickers for their class(es). ITC is available to assist with on-campus training, question structuring, and developing interactive strategies with clicker technology. We’re also available to assist students with basic clicker troubleshooting.

What steps do students take to use clickers?

Students can purchase a Gen2 clicker from the UTK Bookstore for $21.25. An additional fee of $12/term or $39/lifetime is required to register each clicker for use with the CPSrf system.
NOTE: Clickers must be registered in the manner in which the course will be administered. Before registering a clicker, students must consult the instructor for each course.
If the instructor is using CPS outside of Blackboard, students must obtain a class key from the instructor and register their clicker through CPSOnline. If the instructor is integrating CPS into Blackboard, students must register via their Online@UT course site. Click below for registration instructions.
