The Link Between Technology and Teaching
The Instructional Technology Advisory Committee (ITAC) report of May 1994 identified multiple goals and objectives for an Instructional Technology Support Initiative at the University of Tennessee Knoxville campus. The recommendations contained in the ITAC report were based on extensive assessments of state-of-the-art instructional technologies and a comprehensive review of activities integrating these technologies at UTK and comparable institutions. A direct outcome of that report was the establishment of the Academic Technology (AT) department and the Innovative Technology Center (ITC) within the Division of Information Infrastructure (DII).

While organizational names have changed and DII became the Office of Information Technology and AT was renamed Educational Technology, the ITC has continued to provide UTK faculty, academic teaching staff, and graduate teaching assistants with leadership, support, and resources to enrich the educational experience of learners through effective and innovative uses of technology. At the heart of the ITC is a team of highly skilled professionals comprised of instructional, multimedia, graphical interface and Web designers, computer programmers, technology integration specialists, and information scientists. Rounding out the ITC staff is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable group of graduate and student assistants from a variety of disciplines including Education, Business, Information Sciences, Computer Science, Art, and Communications.
